![]() Mozilla 1.7 was updated with security updates until April of 2006. Eventually, the Mozilla Foundation ceased development of the Mozilla Application Suite. In the Spring of 2003, the Mozilla development roadmap was changed to focus development on the stand-alone applications Firefox and Thunderbird. (The IRC chat client, known as ChatZilla, is available as an extension.) There's even an equivalent product, for the HTML editor, called Nvu. That product became Mozilla Firefox and when the same thing was done to the email/newsgroups client, that product became Mozilla Thunderbird. They wanted to build just a browser, without the complications and added code, brought on by additional components. Additional components, added to the suite were an IRC chat client, and web development tools (DOM Inspector, JavaScript Debugger).Ī group of Mozilla contributors wanted to use the Mozilla code to build a much more streamlined product. (See: The Relationship and History between Mozilla and Netscape) The Mozilla Application Suite, like Netscape Communicator, is an ' all in one' application, which contains a browser, email/newsgroups client, address book, and an HTML editor. The Mozilla open source project began as a way of developing the next generation of the Netscape Communicator suite. The Differences between SeaMonkey versus Firefox and Thunderbird Yes, I know. Here is the recent releases page for those who might be interested.Differences between SeaMonkey vs. It's amazing that they are able to keep Seamonkey going and that they still have enough people willing to work on it and presumably, use it, even in 2023. Well, I found out that Sea Monkey is still going strong. (which I still use up to this present day) I found other alternatives that I liked much better, such as Pale Moon and Waterfox. I never really used the browser that much. I agreed with that sentiment, (that Mozilla was becoming too corporate and mainstream) so I downloaded Seamonkey to try it - way back then. This allows the user to extend SeaMonkey by modifying add-ons for Thunderbird or the add-ons that were formerly compatible with Firefox before the latter switched to WebExtensions. ![]() The new project-leading group is called the SeaMonkey Council.Ĭompared to Firefox, the SeaMonkey web browser keeps the more traditional-looking interface of Netscape and the Mozilla Application Suite, most notably the XUL architecture. The development of SeaMonkey is community-driven, in contrast to the Mozilla Application Suite, which until its last released version (1.7.13) was governed by the Mozilla Foundation. SeaMonkey was created in 2005 after the Mozilla Foundation decided to focus on the standalone projects Firefox and Thunderbird. It is the continuation of the former Mozilla Application Suite, based on the same source code, which itself grew out of Netscape Communicator and formed the base of Netscape 6 and Netscape 7. SeaMonkey is a free and open-source Internet suite. Seamonkey basically was born out of people who were unhappy many years ago when Mozilla started becoming too "mainstream" and they didn't like the new direction that Mozilla was taken. Well, one of those browsers that has been around for years and years is Seamonkey. So I always have been using and experimenting with strange browsers that only a tiny fraction even use, much less have heard of. ![]() That covers many things, including browsers. ![]() I don't know about you, but I have always been an "alternative" type person.
